Teach Kids How To Make Paper Beads

By Matthew Cook

Crafting is many things to many people but when a person can create something new from an older object, it takes things to another level. There are many ways to repurpose items so they can be used in another fashion. There is decoupage, scrap art, some will learn how to make paper beads that may be used around the home or as a gift.

The great thing about crafting is there are no limitations. When it comes to repurposing an item, sometimes the more detail added gives the object a new life. A good example of this is home accessories, jewelry, or decor items that are found at a thrift store or yard sales. If something is in fairly good condition or needs a minor repair, it may have the potential to come back as something fabulous.

These days, recycled clothes do not have to look like something that came out of a trash bin or made by someone who hates to sew. There are even ways to create new clothing, toys, or decorative items that look as if they belong in a fancy store. Paper beading is one of the most popular ways to create functional crafts for the home or as gifts.

Although objects are larger, sometimes these can be easier for the novice. Anyone who learns about this method of beading can take strips of gift wrap sheets that may coordinate with another home decor item or theme. Ideas can range from curtain holders to napkin rings. Beads can also be made to decorate picture frames, bookmarks, or even as a drink marker for those who like to have home gatherings.

This is also a good way to match colors that are hard to find or are out of season. By using acrylic paint on paint strips, anyone can make details in various shades of purple, orange, or even metallic colors. The nice thing about acrylic paint is that it dries faster than other mediums, is easy to mix, and very inexpensive.

Decoupage is a great way to create patterns or texture. It can be used with wrapping paper, cardstock, newspaper, and many others. The method entails covering the strips with a solution that makes it more pliable and can wrap around any object with minimal details in the surface. Vases are perfect for practicing this method because of the smooth texture.

For those who like smaller details, these methods can also be used to make or repurpose jewelry. Comic strips make fun designs for beaded jewelry pieces. If a person is creative enough, they can start a fashion trend by using older wrapping paper or stationary with designs that were popular decades ago.

Another great thing about repurposing is that many of the tools needed do not cost a lot of money and do not use much storage space. Rolled gift wrap paper can be cut into sheets and placed inside a flat box with a lid. Although there are many bead rollers on the market, it is best to start small and upgrade when the time is right.
