How Fathers Of Confederation Saved Canada

By Jason Burns

Every country has people they can thank for the peace and freedom they are enjoying today. These are the people who gave their all to mask sure countries worked together. British American colonies can credit their agreement to work together under one nation to fathers of confederation. They are the people who sat down to have meaningful talks about the stability of these colonies.

If they did not put the work they did to these talks Canada could have been swallowed into the American world and maybe it would not exist as an independent country. Most of these men were something else before becoming politicians. Someone like Leonard Tilley was a pharmacist who sold his drug store to pursue his political ambition and that decision made him a hero in Canada.

America has been able to fight Britain and gain independence but most of the states in the north that later came to form Canada were still under their rule. When American war broke British supported the south instead of the north which angered many people. The north lacked military power and that is when America came in trying to be their rescuer.

In that moment while America was still trying to take over the northern part and Britain did not want to pay money to defend these countries they argued them to be independent. The British government still wanted to feel superior and not be defeated by the United States once more. Due to that fear these founding people settled for an alliance instead of war as America tried to take over.

In the beginning of these conferences and debates a lot of people did not understand the benefits they stood to gain by being part of the alliance. Having business men like Jean Charles Chapais who was a businessman in the panel meant that they cared about their economic trades. Being part of the alliance strengthened the economic ties with other countries making trade better.

In the same period the northern colonies especially the province of Canada had some political problems. The two parties involved in making decisions on how to run the country had differences. They also did not speak the same language. Some spoke English while others used French to communicate so joining other colonies made the decision making process easier.

These brave men will be celebrated for longer generations however not each of their story ended yup successfully. Darcy McGee who was an Irish born journalist who later moved to Montreal to become part of the revolution. However after about ten years of being part of the revolution he was shot and killed in what is believed to have been a premeditated plan.

It is because of their way of seeing things differently that they realized the importance of countries working in unison. They are the planners who devised the first idea. They are still remembered as amazing figures that helped the country be formed and their commitment will forever be cherished. These gatherings still go down as the most memorable events in Canada.
