Large Scale Abstract Landscape Drawing

By Kevin Brooks

Painting is an art that does not grow overnight but takes a lot of years to learn the art and become an expert in it. Since the forms of painting are different, artists are also different thus if you want to become a painter, you must know where exactly you want to delve in. For instance, you can decide to delve into large scale abstract landscape drawing. This art usually involves several steps that must be followed for you to come up with a portrait that is impressive. Therefore, one must start training early and applying the knowledge often gained to gain experience.

There are a series of steps that should be followed when this kind of painting is carried out. Before beginning the activity, it is advisable to have scenery that you are interested in then work out this scenery with photos, sketches and studies before starting the main painting. This is simply because some mistakes in small sketches can be overlooked, but small mistakes in bigger paintings cannot be ignored.

Then, one must know what he/she wants to say about the layout then divide the canvas into simplified sections according to the kind of painting that he intends to do. Then, use dark abstruse shapes to paint the masses with four value planes that are basic.

Make sure that the sky always gets the most lighting since it normally is the source of light for everything. Ground planes then follow but with lesser lighting as they normally get light from the sky. Planes that are slanted like hills, slanted rocks as well as mountains get light that is less than ground planes while buildings, trees and other upright planes get the lowest light.

The next step is to start defining the features like trees with the right amount of shading. For instance, trees should have a dark green color that is rich at the bottom while the top is shaded with a light green color. When mixing the colors, try to add all colors that you will be suing on the palette so that the exercise becomes simpler and harmonious.

Depending on the kind of painting you are making, use the palette knife to scrub or scrape the painting and deconstruct as frequently as possible. This will sketch to be soft and simple and have edges that are hard at the focal point. Always use bigger brushes from start to finish so that you do not poke the portrait.

After that, you should start working colors all over the painting and define it more. The main aim at this stage is to try and make the painting look more opaque and concentrate on values. The paint application is thickened, but it should be scraped off so as soften the edges then add more paint on the scraped areas.

At the final stages, you should use the smaller flat brushes as well as palette knives so that you add on the details. After refining the images, intensifying focal points as well as pushing the portrait thickness, hard edges, contrast and value, you should let it dry. After it has completely dried, start glazing and sand it to make it more exquisite.
