How To Make A Coiled Basket

By Margaret Nelson

Making of baskets is a very relaxing and easy craft that you can get involved with. Aside from this, it only requires few tools and materials that you can easily get. When you have become an expert in crafting a coiled basket, you can create baskets of various shapes and sizes. The aim of this article is to provide you with useful details especially if you are a beginner.

There are a number of materials you will need. They include the crafting material of any color you want. Raffia is mostly used. You will also need universal needles and a sewing machine and scissors. If you do not have them at your disposal, you can get them cheaply at a store. Make sure you get a good quality material that will make a container that can last for long.

The materials must be cut to the required sizes. Cut them to about a centimeter in width and choose a length you like. A rotary cutter or ruler can assist you in measuring. You then need to craft the base. Before doing this, set up your machine for a zigzag stitch. You will require a three-millimeter length and a five and a half millimeter width for working. The stop down feature needs to be used as you will have to pivot while starting.

Coil the material using your hand until you achieve a flat circle that measures a half an inch to one inch in diameter. A very important detail is to ensure that the code is coming out from the left side of the circle. You then should place the circle formed beneath the presser foot and commence stitching from the center. Continue stitching so that you create a base for the container.

The next step is to shape the sides of the bowl. When you get ready to make the sides, you need to wedge your hand beneath the base circle and press it against the left side of your machine and then continue to stitch. You need to keep the cord under pressure so that you prevent the sides from flaring. If you apply enough tension, the side of the container will start to curve inwards. Keep your work vertical as you work on the sides.

When you have achieved the most appropriate size of your bowl, you need to cut the rope and remember to leave a two-inch tail. Stitch the tail back and forth for around a half an inch followed by cutting the thread. You then should set up the machine for a close zigzag. After folding the tail over the edge, your bowl is now ready.

If you want the baskets to be colored, you can either use dylon or rit dye for adding color. Before you take this step, you need to confirm that the container is wet. Place it in the water and dye solution ensuring you completely immerse it in the solution. To achieve a lighter color, the dye can be diluted with more water.

The most important point to remember while sewing is to go slow and be keen. This helps you to avoid mistakes that could ruin your entire work. After sewing a couple of baskets, the next ones will be easy. This is an activity that can help you make some money.
